Child Personal Safety Curriculum |

CAC EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS |
| In the early 1990’s a growing concern regarding child abuse prompted the
Child Advocacy Center and the Mobile County Public Schools to collaborate in developing the Mobile
County Public School Schools Child Personal Safety Curriculum that is now required
curriculum in all 100 local schools. This curriculum is taught in grades K, 1,3,5,7, and 10 and is age and
grade appropriate. A committee, under the direction of Pat Guyton, Executive Director of The
Child Advocacy Center and Sylvia Douglas (Mobile County Public School System), completed extensive research
looking at available curricula and selected the award winning Tacoma, Washington Curriculum as a basis for
Mobile County. Grants were obtained from Shell Oil and The Alabama Legislature to
finance the project and a committee of teachers and administrators wrote the curriculum guide. The program was
piloted at Alba Elementary, Middle and High Schools. In May of 2001, the curriculum was up
dated by a new committee of teachers and counselors to include current needs such as lessons on date rape and
Internet safety. Shell Oil provided funds for this very expensive printing project.
Ms. Paula Loper is the Educational Program Coordinator. She provides teacher in-service and training for the
public school employees who teach children the curriculum. She presents a PTA program entitled "CHILD ABUSE: WHAT EVERY PARENT NEEDS TO KNOW."
Ms. Loper, a former principal in the Mobile County Public School System is also available to speak at community
events or to provide a booth for health fairs. If you are interested in scheduling an event with her, call 342-8699. |
